How long should an international money transfer take?

Ask three services how long a transfer takes and you'll get three different answers, all technically true. The honest version: it depends on the payout method, the hour you send, and how many hands the money passes through.

What sets the clock

Cash pickup can be ready in minutes once the transfer clears. Bank deposits often wait on local banking hours and batch processing, which is why a Friday-evening send can sit until Monday. Wallets usually land fast, sometimes instantly.

Weekends and public holidays stretch everything. So does a first transfer to a new recipient, since extra checks run the first time.

A realistic range

For most modern services, minutes to a few hours is normal for cash and wallets. Bank deposits run from same day to two working days. Anything beyond that, and something is usually waiting on a review or a partner bank, not lost.

The Financial Stability Board has spent years pushing the industry to make this faster and clearer, which tells you how uneven it still is.

When to worry, and when not to

If you're inside the window you were quoted, wait. If you're past it with no update, that's the moment to ask for a status and a reference. We wrote a whole piece on why transfers get stuck and how to unstick them.

Moving money should feel like sending a text.
